It’s not true what people say, that the devil has all the good music and they call it jazz!
It is quite possible to be both a Christian and a jazz lover at the same time.
At 7.30 p.m. on the second Friday of each month, or as stated on the church calender. Our Jazz Club meets at a member’s home to share in fellowship and our favourite jazz recordings. With a BBQ every few months on a Sunday after Church. We enjoy a time of fellowship over lunch while listening to great Jazz.
The concept is really quite simple. Any one who wants to attend comes along, brings a couple of their favourite jazz recordings (CDs, cassettes, LPs, 45s and, yes, even 78s) and adds to the enjoyment of fellowship around music.
Watch the diary for a couple of special events this year on the Jazz calender. On the 19th October we will be having a “Jazz in The Kirk” Also on Sunday 5th October there will be a Gospel Service at 9.45 am. This is the weekend of the Jazz Festival at Manly.

THE NEW YOUNG NORTHSIDE BIG BAND
was held on Friday 19th September 2008 at 7.30 pm St. Andrew's Church Raglan Street Manl. What a concert, if you missed out you need to keep this great band in mind. They are the Jazz musicians of the future. They just wowed the audience with their expertise in playing and presenting the music. They range from Year 7 to 12. Of course they are being tutored by the best with Geoff Power behind the baton. John Speight would be very proud of what this band has become.
The Young Northside Big Band was founded by the late John Speight(founder of the Manly Jazz Festival) to give young musicians a chance to experience quality Big Band jazz at a time when such bands were virtually non-existent in schools or the wider community.
This band became a major force in Jazz Education in Sydney, numbering James Morrison, Dale Barlow, Steve Williams, Trevor Griffin amongst its alumni. Geoff Power re-formed the band in 2008 as a tribute to John’s pioneering work in Jazz Education. The members are all high school students who live and attend schools in the Northern Beaches.
Geoff (cornet, trombone, tuba, vocals) is one of Australia’s finest young Traditional Jazz musicians, having played with musicians of the calibre of Bob Barnard, Tom Baker, James Morrison, Don Burrows, The New Wolverine Jazz Orchestra and many others. He has appeared as a featured soloist at festivals and jazz clubs throughout Australia, Europe and the USA. His debut CD, “Aspects Of Power’, was nominated for an Australian Recording Industry Award (ARIA) in 2000 under the “Best Jazz Album” category. His band, Geoff Power’s Classic Jazz, appeared at the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival in Davenport, Iowa,Bix’s birthplace, in July 2005. Geoff is also greatly interested in jazz education, and has many years’ experience working with school jazz bands and musicians.

Sunday 5th October 2008 at 9.45 am St. Andrew's Presbyterian church Raglan street Manly
Featuring The Maryville Jazz Band - The Maryville Jazz Band began 40 years ago by a group of friends with a passion for playing traditional jazz emulating the style of Louise Armstrong and George Lewis.
The band has always been in great demand and in the early days of its inception, played at regular venues 7 nights a week. Band members have come and gone over the years but the core of the 7 piece band remains in tact.
The Maryville Jazz Band comprises trumpet, clarinet, trombone, piano, banjo, string bass and drums. The band is a regular favourite at jazz festivals inciting standing ovations at jazz festivals in New South Wales and at the famous York Jazz Festival in Western Australia.
This band is well known for its performance at jazz gospels with its stirring backing of such jazz singing legends as Francine Bell, Lee Gunness and Carol Ralph and is looking forward to supporting Diannia Heather at the gospel service during the 2008 Manly Jazz Festival.
